Frederick Maryland: Best Small Town in America

Located in central Maryland, the City of Frederick is brimming with culture, beauty and fascinating history. Frederick is also known as The Clustered Spires because of the church steeples on the City skyline.

Home to Hood College, this town boasts four long blocks of Baker Park through which winds a creek lined with weeping willows. The park is also home to an amphitheater, Culler Lake, a swimming pool, swinging bridge, covered walking bridge, playgrounds and tennis courts. Along one end of the park sits Schifferstadt. Built by German settlers out of stone it is thought to be the second oldest home in the State of Maryland.

Frederick is Rich in History

Visited by George Washington and Abraham Lincoln this town is the heart of American History. American History started on Record Street in Frederick, Maryland with the Repudiation of the Stamp Act before the American Revolution War broke out. Frederick celebrates a half day bank holiday each year in honor of Repudiation Day.

John Greenleaf Whittier immortalized Frederick resident and Civil War Unionist Barbara Fritchie in his poem with the same name. A plaque placed by the Frederick Chapter Daughters of the American Revolution states the author of the American Creed called Frerick home. Francis Scott Key, author of our country’s National Anthem is buried here in historic Mount Olivet Cemetery alongside his wife and parents.

The National Museum of Civil War Medicine and nearby National Monocacy Battlefield add to the layers of history found here. A marker at the Hessian Barracks and Maryland School for the Deaf denotes the spot the Lewis and Clark Expedition staged to begin the journey out west.
